Information for the citizens visiting Egypt: telephone registration
On January 1st, 2025 the Egyptian government introduced a mobile phone registration system, under which devices that are not officially registered may be disconnected from local cellular networks. This rule only applies to stays in Egypt longer than 90 days.
Registration, which includes a customs duty of 38% of the phone's value, is completed immediately upon arrival in Egypt at the airport customs area or through the Telephony app.
Registration does not require the owner's personal information, but only the device's IMEI (15-digit code).
UPON ARRIVAL IN EGYPT, YOU CAN REGISTER ONE MOBILE PHONE FREE OF CHARGE IN THE AIRPORT CUSTOMS AREA.
When purchasing a phone in Egypt, use the above-mentioned app to check the device's registration in the system. Do not pay fees through unofficial channels.
This change does not apply to phones operating in Egypt prior to the new regulations, tablets, laptops, or phones roaming internationally (with foreign SIM cards).
